Bound in original cloth, with red on black title label, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has edge wear including chips at head and tail of spine; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by frontispiece, 12 colour plates, 309 numbered text figures and by other text figures and facsimiles. Definitive reference book on Victorian silkwork pictures, with appendix of registered designs. Stevengraph was the Victorian trade name for woven silk pictures which were developed by a Coventry silk weaver, Thomas Stevens (1828-88), and manufactured by him using a Jacquard loom from the 1860s. The factory was destroyed in the Coventry Blitz of 1940. The book includes chapters on scenic and portrait Stevengraphs, on book markers and silks by other manufacturers. Geoffrey Godden (1929-2016) was a writer on antiques and an authority on ceramics.
