8vo. 8.5 x 5.75 inches. xxv + [i] + 446 + [1] pp. Bound in original navy cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper. Minor wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by map and 24 pages of black and white plates. Pictorial endpapers. A history of the Atlantic island of St Helena, including its role in the slave trade, first published in 1938. Nine appendices include a list of governors (to 1938) and of the bird species of the island. Philip Gosse (1879-1959) was a physician and writer on piracy, including The Pirates' Who's Who (1924). An account of his career and links with the island is given in the Introduction by Trevor Hearl.
