Notes
The first UK edition of the principal prose works of the great US poet and essayist, Walt Whitman. It prints several hundred items, including diary extracts, observations on the Civil War and his views on other literary figures. It was first published in Philadelphia in 1882. The Glasgow publisher advertises at the back, Whitman's Leaves of Grass, his poetical works, first published in 1855, as a companion volume to this title. This copy is from the library of Robert Offley Ashburton Crewe-Milnes, 1st Marquess of Crewe, and previously the Earl of Crewe (1858-1945), Liberal politician, who held a wide variety of offices in his career, including those of Colonial and India Secretary.
