FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 5.75 x 8 inches. x +179 pp. Text in German and English.
Parallel texts in German and English of the selected poetry of Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956). This first translation of Brecht's poetry into English, with an introduction, was by Hoffman Reynolds Hays (1904-80), New York playwright, poet and novelist. Hoffman was a collaborator of Brecht's close friend, Hanns Eisler (Austrian composer, 1898-1962) and obtained manuscripts and translation rights at his suggestion in 1939, following this up by the first English translations of several of Brecht's works.
