Large 8vo. 10.25 x 7 inches. x + 274 pp. + [4] pp. index. Bound in original orange cloth with contrasting spine title labels, gilt. A little wear to extremities and indications of water damage causing cockling of some pages particularly towards the rear; otherwise a very good copy. Inset:inside dust wrapper flap containing blurb with notes on author. Illustrated by colour portrait frontispiece and by black and white photographs, including facsimiles. Decorated by headpiece chapter drawing vignettes and by blue title page vignette. Pictorial endpapers. Account of the port and buildings of Alexandria, Virginia,with special reference to its connection with George Washington, who owned a town house there and later lived at his Mount Vernon estate ten miles away. Part Three consists of five nineteenth century sketches. Well illustrated account by local resident Gay Montague Moore.
