Item Description

FIRST EDITION. 5 x 7.5 inches. [vi] + 88 + [1] pp. Title page in red and black. Bound in original navy cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper by John Piper, which has sunned spine and some edge chips at head and tail of spine. A little wear to extremities and browning of flyleaves, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by colour frontispiece. Decorated by initials. First edition of Waugh's novella, written following his travels in post-war Germany and in Spain. It is set on the occasion of an academic gathering in the totalitarian state of Neutralia and expresses Waugh's opposition to Balkan Communism and his distaste for the drabness of Europe after the war. Notable dust wrapper by John Piper.
