Sir Charles Igglesden (1861-1939) was a journalist, sportsman and Kent county councillor, today best known for his authorship of the series, A Saunter through Kent with Pen and Pencil, which first appeared, from 1899, as articles in the Kentish Express of Ashford, of which he was editor. The Saunters, covering a total of 242 towns and villages, were published in thirty four hardback volumes,1900-44, all illustrated by Xavier Willis (1872-1947). This Volume 33 was, except for some review copies, destroyed by German bombing shortly after coming off the press. Originals had become so scarce that copies coming on the market recently were selling for prices in excess of ?300. This reprint is the work of Malcolm Horton of Oakweald Publishing, who in 2018 published a biography of Igglesden, accompanied by a reprint of nine villages which were were never published in hardback to form Volume 35 of the series.
