Two volumes in one. Thick 8vo. 5.25 x 8.25 inches. Unpaginated [1016] pp., including 2 pages of publisher's advertisements at end. Despite some irregularities, the register is complete, and is continuous for both parts. Preface and explanatory text to both parts in French and English.

Notes

Abel Boyer (1662-1729) was born in Castres, Upper Languedoc and emigrated to England as a Huguenot. He taught French in the royal Household but as a zealous Whig, he failed to achieve advancement and concentrated on writing and journalism. His French and English dictionary proved to be advance on previous productions and appeared in numerous editions into the nineteenth century. The full Royal Dictionary was first published in 1699 and this Abridged version in 1700. It is notable for its full definition and explanation of French and English words and idioms.
