8vo. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. 256 pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt. in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has light edge wear and a few small chips at head and tail of spine, with slight sunning. Review comment on rear wrapper. A little wear to extremities and some browning of flyleaves; otherwise a very good copy. Set in a small Yorkshire town, the author's working class hero seeking to rise in the world, pursues relationships with two middle class women. The first and most successful novel of John Braine (1922-86) from Bradford. From being a mildly left wing, angry young man he had progressed to the political right by the late 1960s. Second impression of the first edition also published in March 1957.
