London Published January1. by W.J. Huggins, Marine Painter 105 Leadenhall St.
This view respectfully dedicated by permission to the chairman, the deputy chairman, and the board of directors of the royal harbour of ramsgate. by their mast obedient and humble servant w. j. huggins.
Etching and Aquatint in original Hand-colour marked "Proof" 27 X 18 inches. Mounted, framed and glazed. In fine condition, and although some of the colour has faded slightly the sky and sea are printed in colour and highlighted by hand. This is one of the most difficult of printing methods and is rare due to the expense of production. Huggins, was the most famous of marine artists of his day, was the author of this rare and beautiful aquatint showing the pleasure craft arriving at Ramsgate with the town and harbour in the distance described with great accuracy, many buildings being recognisable. The view was probably commissioned by the Board of Directors of the Harbour, hence the dedication. Large separately published views of this period are extremely scarce.
