FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 5.25 x 7.5 inches. 398 pp. Bound in original pink cloth, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper (with portrait of author on back), which has a few small edge chips at head and tail of spine. Minor wear to extremities and occasional traces of foxing, but otherwise a very good copy. Inscription on first free endpaper. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. The first novel of the author's second trilogy which was published 1952-55. Joyce Carey (1888-1957) was an Anglo-Irish novelist who had joined the Nigerian political service as a colonial officer before the First World War, in which he fought against the Germans in their colony of Kamerun. Many of his earlier novels had an African or Irish background before he moved on to examining the themes of historical and social change. His titles were translated into several European languages and Michael Joseph published a uniform edition of his works
