4to. 11.5 x 9.25 inches. xviii + 155 pp. Bound in original green cloth with gilt and black titles, in dust wrapper, which has slightly darkened spine and edge wear, including chips at head and tail of spine. Rough cut edges. Minor wear to extremities, browning of flyleaves and spotting of edges; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 49 pages of black and white plates. A study of portrait painting, with an historical survey followed by evaluative comments on various aspects of the portrait and the techniques of its painting, including space shapes, light, poses, attitudes and psychological aspects. Herbert Ernest Augustus Furst (1874-1945) was an art critic and writer, whose many works included The Modern Woodcut (1924). Scarce in dust wrapper.
