FIRST EDITION. 4to. 11.25 x 8.5 inches. 160 pp. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, with contrasting blue title label, gilt, in pictorial dust wrapper. A very good copy. Illustrated throughout in duotone and monochrome and in colour, including frontispiece. Decorated by title page vignette. Biography of Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe (1901-79), renowned book illustrator of rural life and bird artist, including a four page bibliography. His career started with the first illustrated edition of Tarka the Otter, by Henry Williamson in 1932. He went on to illustrate five other Williamson titles and numerous other authors, including Alison Uttley, Niall himself and later many Ladybird books. Niall (1916-2002), who sometimes wrote under his real name of John McNeillie, was a prolific rural life writer and novelist from Galloway.
