First English edition. 24 cm x 16cm. 15 black and white plates. 153 pages. Very good copy in the original gilt-blocked cloth. Spine bands and panel edges slightly dust-toned and rubbed as with age. Minor scattered foxing. Frontispiece PHOTOGRAPH OF ROBESON BY JACOB EPSTEIN Front paste down contains an original photograph of Paul Bustill Robeson inscribed, September 27th 1930 in 'Langalla' garden. First free endpaper; previous owner Dolly May's inscription, 'To Clara Baines with loving gratitudes for her sympathetic understanding from Dolly 1929-1930'. Last free end paper; an original gelatin silver print of 'Paul and Dolly' Langalla, Catisfield. *'Langalla' was a large house in the village of Catisfield, Fareham, Hampshire. Owned by Captain Auther de Kewer May and Mrs. Henriette Dolly May, Robeson stayed there while he was working nearby.* Paul Robeson famously played Othello in 1930 at the Savoy theatre London opposite the British actor Peggy Ashcroft.
