8vo. 7.75 x 5.5 inches. xvi + 768 pp. Bound in contemporary purple cloth, gilt, with blind stamped decorative boards. Binder's label of Burn 37 and 38 Kirby St. Rough cut edges. Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine. Scattered foxing,including preliminaries, but otherwise a very good copy. Armourial bookplate of Maurice Murray. Illustrated by 23 engraved plates. New edition of the best selling book by Samuel Warren (1807-77), barrister, novelist and briefly an MP. Born in Wales, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, 1826-28, but in a change of profession to the law, entered the Inner Temple and was called to the bar in 1837. This title, also appearing in Blackwood's Magazine, was first published in book form in 1832, contained some autobiographical content from Warren's student years in Edinburgh, but was basically a blend of sensational stories and imaginary case histories. In its use of professional anecdotes it prefigured the later category of crime fiction writing. Artwork by Josiah Wood Whymper (1813-1903), wood engraver, artist and illustrator.
