Item Description
FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 5.25 x 7.25 inches. [viii] + 381 pp. Bound in contemporary half vellum over brown cloth; spine decorated gilt with contrasting brown morocco title label, gilt. All edges yellow. Light wear to extremities and a little foxing, largely confined to fly leaves and preliminaries; otherwise a very good copy. Armourial bookplate of Jebb family and signature of Arthur Jebb on third free endpaper above early bookseller's description. A novel relating the imagined life of a 'fallen woman,' Mary Smith. It was apparently suppressed, but was reissued by Ward, Lock in 1873. Published anonymously, it is attributed to the Rev. Henry Gladwyn Jebb (1826-98), a cleric, educated at Cambridge, who inherited a country estate in 1878. A handsomely bound copy of this scarce title.
