Notes

John Milton was appointed Secretary for Foreign Tongues to the Commonwealth government in 1649 and held this post until the Restoration. His main task was to compose letters to foreign governments in Latin but he also retained the letters addressed to Oliver Cromwell, as head of state, 1649- 1658, which are reproduced here, about half of them having been written in 1650-51 alone. In his preface to the collection, Nickolls describes three categories of correspondence: Letters of Communication to Oliver Cromwell, including intercepted royalist letters and domestic and foreign intelligence; Letters of Congratulation on his victories and for dissolving Parliament and Letters of Exhortation, urging him to reform the Church and State. John Nickolls (1710?-1745), the editor, amassed a large collection of books and prints. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1740 and of the Royal Society in 1744. This copy is from the library of Robert Offley Ashburton Crewe-Milnes, 1st Marquess of Crewe, and previously the Earl of Crewe (1858-1945), Liberal politician, who held a wide variety of offices in his career, including those of Colonial and India Secretary. A scarce title.
