8vo. 8.5 + 5.5 inches. xxvi + 521 + 428-528 pp. Pagination irregular. Bound in contemporary leather; spine compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt, with contrasting title label, gilt. Extremities worn at head and tail of spine, but otherwise a very good copy. Early signature on title page. Illustrated by 20 engraved plates, including one folding and folding coloured frontispiece and by text figures. As normal there is no plate numbered XVII A best selling handbook of chemistry with practical experiments and an account of industrial processes such as coal gas manufacture. Attractively illustrated with copperplate engravings, a fine coloured frontispiece of a gas works, a depiction of a steam locomotive hauled coal train, a diagram of a house centrally heated by steam, and a view of the interior of an experimentalist's laboratory. By Colin Mackenzie (1795-1854), writer of popular informative and educational books, including Five Thousand Receipts in all the Useful and Domestic Arts (1823), a compilation on household economy. A very scarce title.
