FIRST EDITION. Royal 8vo. 9.25 x 6.75 inches. viii + 222 pp. pp. Bound in original maroon cloth, gilt. A little wear to extremities, including corners and head and tail of spine, which is sunned. Browning of flyleaves and scattered foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Portions of front and spine of the dust wrapper have been pasted on to front and rear endpapers, with bookplate on front, and 1946 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by frontispiece, throughout by 124 pages of black and white plates and by text figures (277 numbered figures). Decorated by title page vignette. An extensively illustrated survey of traditional daily life, expanded from the author's Old West Surrey of 1904 to cover the home counties more generally. It covers the fireplace, the hearth and its implements, lighting, the kitchen, furniture,, cottage construction, home industries, the farm, costume, travelling traders and gypsies, mechanisms and mills, transport, gates and fences, bridges, etc. By the famous gardener and garden writer, Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932)
