FIRST EDITION. 8vo, in fours. 7 x 4.75 inches. vii + 122 pp. + [5] pp. publisher's advertisements and colophon. In limp purple cloth, gilt, with decorative blind stamping. Extremities worn, spine and front board edges sunned and flyleaves browned; otherwise a very good copy. English surnames examined by placing them in groups, according to their categories of origin, e.g., objects of nature, callings, occupations, and localities. An expanded second edition appeared in 1879. The author, Christopher Legge Lordan also published The Unwritten Book: Colloquies on Poetry and Poets, first published 1844 under a variant title. Scarce first edition.
