8vo, in fours. 7.25 x 5 inches. viii+ 224 pp. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt and black titles; boards with black and blind stamped decorative borders. Some wear to extremities, including corners and head and tail and edge of spine. Flyleaves browned; otherwise a very good clean copy. English surnames examined by placing them in groups, according to their categories of origin, e.g., objects of nature, callings, occupations, and localities. Expanded from the first edition of 1874. The author, Christopher Legge Lordan also published The Unwritten Book: Colloquies on Poetry and Poets, first published 1844 under a variant title.
