Decorated by colophon at end. First edition of a single work by Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909), poet of the 'decadent school.' At his time he was espousing republican and revolutionary causes, including the unification of Italy. The French Third Republic (1870-1940) was proclaimed in Paris, after the defeat and capture of the Emperor Napoleon III by the Prussian army at the Battle of Sedan
