First Edition, tall 8vo. 9 x 6 inches, xxix + 278 pp. Bound in the original blue marbled cloth, skilfully rebacked preserving the original spine, occasional slight foxing but a very good copy. Illustrated with a chromolithographed frontispiece and 9 plates, complete. The first edition of one of great books in the early scientific researches into Glaciers. Forbes developed a theory on the flow of glaciers which caused some controversy with the other great glacial theorist Tyndall. Forbes is remembered for his groundbreaking work on Heat and particularly Glaciers, he was professor of Natural Philosophy at Edinburgh. This copy was from the library of William Whitehead Watts 1860 - 1947 Eminent Geologist F.R.S; H.F.R.S.E.; F.G.S.; F.M.S; L.L.D. and Later another Geologist Professor O.M.B. Bulman F.R.S.; F.G.S etc.
