Synopsis

Humbly submitted to the consideration of the rt. honourable the house of peers, and the house of commons, in parliament assembled, by their obedient, humble servant, george bishop.

Item Description

8vo., 21 pp. Pamphlet. A reprint of the very rare, Maidstone-printed, eighteenth-century smuggling pamphlet from the pen of (Sir) George Bishop who, as a distiller of gin in Maidstone, was trying to defend his livelihood which was being undermined by the activities of the smugglers. The detail contained in this little pamphlet is most interesting and a picture emerges of rampant evasion and smuggled goods, freely available everywhere in Kent. Even this reprint is scarce, it seems that no library in Kent has an original.
