Item Description

TWO VOLUMES. 8vo. 7.25 x 5 inches. [4] + 275 pp.; II. [4] + 312 pp' Bound in contemporary red leather, gilt, with spine decorated gilt, over marbled boards. Rough cut edges. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Extremities a little worn, including corners and lower edges and Vol. II, spine darkened. Scattered foxing largely confined to page edges and a slight browning of text margins; otherwise a very good set. Decorated by publisher's series device on title page. First published 1831, this is the unabridged definitive edition of 1832, forming part of the author's collected works published by J. Hetzel. The French title reflects the author's desire to celebrate Paris Cathedral as a marvel of medieval gothic architecture, while the title of the English translations from 1833 onwards (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), places undue emphasis on one character in the novel. Attractively bound set.
