Notes
Using his summer cruise as an historical narrative base, the author relates the seafaring life of his ancestors as he sails north from Maine to Newfoundland and Labrador, returning south via the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the coast of Nova Scotia. George Whiteley (1908-90) was a Newfoundlander, who worked as an oceanographical scientist and later emigrated to the US, where he taught science for many years.
