Embroidered wool and silk background and portrait miniature painted on vellum. Overall size 9 x 6 inches.
Notes
This form of needle work in combination with a portrait miniature became popular in the late eighteenth mostly for sentimental or rustic subjects, this is a curiously salacious choice of subject for what would have been an identifiable portrait. Perhaps it was a family joke, or some long-forgotten witticism?
There is a number of examples in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
