FIRST EDITION THUS. 8vo. 7.25 x 5.25 inches. xiv + 180 pp. Bound in original coloured pictorial cloth, with black titles. A little wear to extremities, including head and tail of spine and occasional traces of foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 15 colour plates, including frontispiece, and by text figures. Decorated by title page vignette. A new English version relating the fantastical adventures of the celebrated fictional character of Baron Munchausen, originally created by the German writer, Rudolf Erich Raspe (1736-94) in 1785. Raspe based his creation on the real life German soldier and aristocrat, Hieronymus Carl Friedrich Munchhausen (1720-97), of Bodenwerder, Hanover, who had served in the Imperial Russian army, and later developed a reputation as a teller of tall stories. The fictional character has remained popular, especially on the continent, ever since and there have been numerous version in print and on stage and screen. John Frederick Bangs (1862-1922) was a prolific US writer, satirist and journal editor. An attractive version of the famous adventures with the artwork of US illustrator, Peter Newell (1862-1926).
