8vo. 9.25 x 6.5 inches, xxi + [iii] + 394 pp. + [8] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original orange cloth with contrasting black title label, gilt, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper, which is damaged with edge wear and clips, small area missing from top of spine and some darkening and staining. Deckled fore edge. Minor wear to extremities and some foxing of edges; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by colour frontispiece. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. Mederic Louis Elie Moreau de Saint-Mery (1750-1819) was a French writer, lawyer and politician, born in Martinique, who studied the revolution in St-Domingue (later Haiti). A slave owner and racial theorist, he was also influenced by the scientific theories of the Enlightenment. He was elected a member of the French Parliament but found himself out of favour with the Revolutionary authorities and fled into exile from Paris to the United States, 1794-98. His diary describes his experiences of life in the new republic, especially in New York and Philadelphia, living in the latter city. Translated from the French and edited by Kenneth Roberts (1885-1957), US journalist and historical novelist and by his wife, Anna.
