8vo. 7.25 x 5 inches. vii + [i] + 262 pp. Bound in contemporary black leather, over marbled boards; spine in compartments, decorated gilt, with gilt titles. Some age related wear and browning, but otherwise a very good copy. Early pencil notes on rear flyleaves and endpaper. Religious and scientific speculations on the Universe by Sir David Brewster (1781-1868) a minister of the Church of Scotland, scientist and inventor, who made a significant contribution to the science of optics, improving the stereoscope to make it portable, inventing the kaleidoscope and promoting the early development of photography in Scotland. This study was inspired by the 1853 publication of an essay, Of the Plurality of Worlds, by The Rev. Dr William Whewell (1794-1866), polymath, theologian and philosopher and Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, 1841-65, in which he argued against the probability of life on other worlds
