Volume I, 308 + [1] pp.; Volume II, 287 + [1] pp.; Volume III, 227 + [1] pp.; Volume IV, 315 + [i] pp. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt, in price clipped dust wrappers, which have darkened spines with chips on head and tail (small missing section on spine of Vol. II). Some browning of edges and flyleaves and traces of scattered, but otherwise generally clean interiors. Illustrated by 104 colour plates, including 4 frontispieces and by 821 black and white text figures. Decorated by publisher's devices on title pages. Classic work covering manners and customs, costume and fashion, which reproduces many of the finest illustrations which were printed in the time span covered by these volumes. Translated from Die Mode by Max von Boehn, who also published a volume continuing the account into the nineteenth century.
