The life and letters of the metallurgist and inventor Sidney Gilchrist Thomas (1850-1885), known for discovering the method of eliminating phosphorus from pig iron in the Bessemer converter, which greatly advanced the commercial production of steel. The early trials took place at the Blaenavon Ironworks in South Wales, leading to a patent in 1878. His work related journeys took him around the world from Europe to Australia and the letters include many fascinating details of his travels and life in other countries. The biographical account linking the letters together is by Robert William Burnie (1851-1933), barrister and clergyman.
