A little wear to extremities, including edges and corners, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 15 plates, tipped in portraits mounted on grey paper and protected by tissue guards, including frontispiece. Decorated by title page vignette. A work of collective biography of composers, with chapters on Handel, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Wagner, followed by accounts of other composers: 'It is about the men themselves rather than about their music that I have chosen to write' (Preface). By James Cuthbert Hadden (1861-1913), Scottish author and biographer, who published numerous studies on composers and opera. Earlier editions of this title published 1909 and 1911.
