Notes
Various military engineering manuals were issued in the second half of the nineteenth onwards, including more detailed titles on field defences, attacks on fortresses, mining and demolition, bridges and railways. This appears to be the first version of the provisional edition (another appeared in 1903) and is of a general nature, covering all of the above topics in one volume. At this date there was still some emphasis on using natural materials that were available in the field, like brushwood and on techniques such as the use of knots. It includes some fine lithographic plates of trenches, redoubts, roads and bridges, etc. and is now a scarce title.
