Illustrated by 4 text figures. A philosophical discussion of science by the German theoretical physicist, Walter Heitler (1904-81), who worked on quantum field theory and quantum electrodynamics. Leaving Nazi Germany in 1933, he subsequently served in academic posts in Bristol, Dublin and Zurich. Translated from the German of 1963.
