Notes
The notice sets out the daily and yearly rents for different sizes of stands for the sale of 'any Corn, Grain, Seeds, Flour, Malt, Hops, Hay, Straw, or other Agricultural Produce.' It also give additional charges for weighing and measuring, according to the weight required. The charges were to be paid to James Smythe, the Deputy Clerk and Inspector of the Markets, Weigher of Provisions, etc. and Collector of the Tolls. New market buildings had been opened in 1826 next to the old premises in the High Street. Maidstone Corn Market was formerly of great importance in supplying the capital and Defoe, in his 1722 tour, commented: 'From this town and the neighbouring parts, London is supplied with more particulars than from any single market town in England.' A fine piece of printing by the Cutbush family, in this case by Richard James (1791-1852).
