4to. 10.25 x 7.75 inches. 247 pp. Title page in red and black. Section headings, etc. in red. Bound in quarter brown cloth, with printed paper title label, over brown boards. Rough cut edges. Extremities worn, including corners. Spine title label damaged and some scattered foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by device on title page. A translation of the Historiettes, first edited and printed form the manuscript 1834-36. Gedeon Talleyrand des Reaux (1619-92) was born in La Rochelle of a Huguenot family. He married his wealthy first cousin, Elizabeth de Rambouillet, which gained him entrance to the salon at the Hotel de Rambouillet in Paris, residence of the society hostess, Catherine de Vivonne, Marquise de Rambouillet (1588-1665) (see p.127-135). From the members of the salon, Tallemant derived much inspiration for the short biographical character sketches of the Historiettes, which are divided into four sections, The Courts of Henri IV and of Louis XIII, the Salon Bleu and Court, City and Country in the Reign of Louis XIV.
