8vo. 6.75 x 5 inches. viii+ 216 pp. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, front board with blind stamped border enclosing gilt block of stag beetle. Colour speckled edges. Minor wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy. Small bird sticker on half title page. Illustrated by 111 photographic plates in black and white and colour, including frontispiece. Pictorial endpapers. A general volume in the well known Wayside and Woodland series appearing from Frederick Warne after 1895. First published in 1923, it covers all aspects of British wildlife from mammals and birds to algae and lichens. Thomas Alfred Coward (1867-1933) was an ornithologist, natural history writer and historian of Cheshire. He is best known for his three volume title in the series, Birds of the British Isles and their Eggs (1920-25).
