Notes
Fitzborne was a pseudonym for William Melmoth (c.1710-99), writer and translator. Cambridge educated he became a lawyer, but he soon abandoned the law for literary pursuits. His Letters on Several Subjects used classical names to refer to people of his acquaintance. They cover various literary and moral subjects including, friendship and women, as well as more mundane matters such as kindness to snails and beetles. In its time the work was much admired for its literary elegance and classical allusions. It was frequently reprinted.
