4to. 11.75 x 8.25 inches. 317 + [3] pp. All text in French. Bound in contemporary quarter red leather over red boards; spine in compartments with raised bands decorated gilt, with gilt titles. Marbled endpapers. A little wear to lower edges of boards and light foxing of page edges. Stain on p. 292; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 13 engraved plates, numbered in text. Thirteen essays on the great French authors and dramatists of the seventeenth century, each accompanied by a portrait, a work which appeared in several editions. By Emile Faguet (1847-1916), author and critic, who was appointed professor of poetry at the University of Paris in 1897.
