TWO VOLUMES. FIRST EDITIONS. 8vo. 9 x 6 inches. Vol. I, xii + 331 pp; Vol. II, xvi + 295 pp. 2 Errata slips tipped in. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt, with blind stamped borders to boards and spine decoration. Deckled edges. Some wear to extremities and occasional scattered foxing, but otherwise a very good set. Illustrated by 3 folding plates, including two frontispieces to Vol. I and by text figures. Fourteen lectures on art covering theory, anatomy, composition and colour, beauty, fresco painting, the Greeks and the Elgin Marbles (which fascinated Haydon) and on individual artists, Fuzeli and his friend, David Wilkie. Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786-1846) was an historical artist, painting on the grand scale and occasional portraitist.
