8vo. 7.25 x 5 inches. iv + 112 pp. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt, with blind stamped decorative borders on boards, enclosing gilt title block on front board. Some wear to extremities, including corners and head and tail of spine, with small splits to spine joints. Occasional foxing in margins and at lower edge of frontispiece and preliminary pages. Frontispiece offset on to title page, but otherwise a very good copy. 1868 gift inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by chromolithograph frontispiece and by wood engraved text figures. New illustrated edition of short stories for children by Maria Edgeworth (1768-1841), Anglo-Irish novelist and educator, who became famous for her 1800 novel, Castle Rackrent. These tales earlier appeared in various editions of her Moral Tales, e.g. Volumes 1 and 2 of The Parent's Assistant of 1826.
