Item Description
FIRST EDITION. 7.75 x 5.25 inches. viii + 425 pp. + 8 pp. publisher's catalogue. Bound in original green cloth, gilt. Extremities worn, including corners and head and tail of spine and foxing of flyleaves and preliminary pages, occasional elsewhere; otherwise a very good copy. The first edition of a classic Wells novel, set in Folkestone and its neighbourhood with a colourful description of working as a draper's assistant in Folkestone during its Edwardian heyday. The snobbery of the West End society is contrasted brilliantly by Wells to the rough and ready areas centred around the harbour and the old town. (Catalogue of the H. G. Wells Collection in the Bromley Public Libraries, 254, p.30; H. G. Wells A Comprehensive Bibliography, 2019, 26, p.8).
