Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Hop Intelligence and Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. News from abroad covers the international Congress of Verona, attended by European sovereigns and the Duke of Wellington, which included a grand fete in the amphitheatre. An account is given of the last moments of the mother of Bonaparte. In the Court of King's Bench a case involving the 'criminal intercourse' of an orphan niece employed as a servant. The plaintiff sought to recover damages from the defendant who made her pregnant, whereby her services were lost. He was awarded £25 and forty shillings costs. In Kent a boat containing five men, a woman and two children attempting to land at Fort Twiss, Hythe was overturned in heavy surf just offshore. They were saved by a naval lieutenant and seamen from the Fort who plunged into the surf and eventually managed to bring the whole party safely ashore.
