Notes
Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and Hop Intelligence and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. An account is given of the Arctic voyage of HMS Fury. From Smyrna in the Ottoman Empire comes news of the massacres of Greeks by the Turkish inhabitants. At the Old Bailey a servant is condemned to death for stabbing his master, a Lieutenant-General after accusing him of seducing his wife. Over twenty others, including four women were similarly sentenced for a variety of offences, uttering forged notes, stealing in dwelling houses, housebreaking, burglary, highway robbery and returning from transportation. Nearly fifty were sentenced to various terms of transportation and others to be imprisoned or publicly or privately whipped. In other news Mr. Green gives his own account of his hazardous ascent and flight in a hydrogen balloon, first reported in the Gazette of 24 July.
