Notes

Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and Hop Intelligence and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. Much of this issue is concerned with a detailed description of the coronation of George IV, including the costumes worn by the dignitaries. In a farcical postscript to this event the estranged Queen, Caroline made repeated attempts to gain access to the Abbey but was continually refused admittance and had to return home in her carriage applauded by an immense concourse of people. The mob incensed by her rejection proceeded to smash the windows of noblemen was chiefly composed of boys and vagabonds of the vilest sort. Coronation celebrations and feasts are reported from several Kentish towns, including Margate where a dinner was provided for 1400 people - 77 scores of roast beef - 1400 loaves of bread - 1400 lbs. of potatoes - 1400 pounds of plum pudding and 888 quarts of good porter. In other news Mr. Green, the aeronaut made a balloon but unable to control the balloon's violent agitation, descended rather uncontrollably at South Mimms.
