Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and Hop Intelligence and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. Parliament debated the slave trade still carried on in foreign shipping with a contribution from Mr Wilberforce. The Recorder's speech at the Old Bailey emphasising that 'the brightest jewel in the British Crown is mercy,' before passing the death sentence on a number of defendants found guilty, is reprinted for the gratification of public curiosity. In Kent members of the 86th Regiment and Marines take part in a riotous affray in the streets of Chatham. A Canterbury baker is fined twenty shillings for selling a quartern loaf four ounces deficient in weight. Other deficient loaves in his shop were seized and distributed to the poor.
