Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. A greater part of this issue (both news and parliamentary reports) is concerned with the Queen Caroline affair, relating to Caroline of Brunswick, the estranged wife of the new King, George IV, who returned to England in an unsuccessful attempt, despite much popular support, to take up her position as Queen. Dover provided a royal salute for Caroline's arrival and 'well-dressed females, young and old, saluted her as she passed.' The Gazette also noted the opportunity afforded by the concourse at Dover for 'some noted adepts from the Metropolis to exercise their calling on the pockets of the spectators...the sum collected in this way is said to have exceeded five hundred pounds,' including one hundred gold Napoleons taken from Alderman Wood. One of those later searched at Canterbury was arrested for having on his person several notes of the Dover Union Bank, part of a missing consignment of £1,300.
