Item Description
Hand-coloured folding engraved map, dissected and laid on to linen. Scale, one mile to one inch. 26 x 39 inches. Map folds into marbled covers with hand written paper title labels, in green slipcase, 7 x 4.75 inches, with printed paper title label. Foxing of map largely confined to margins and verso. Map of central and south west Kent from the Medway towns to Tunbridge Wells and Cranbrook and from Westerham to Maidstone and Headcorn, also showing adjoining areas of Surrey and Sussex to the west and south. County boundaries, many woods and railways are hand coloured. Possibly derived from the Ordnance Survey maps of Kent under the direction of Lt. Colonel William Mudge, RA. James Wyld (1812-87) succeeded his father, James Wyld the Elder, in the family map making business in 1836. The James Wyld map publishing concern finally ceased trading in 1894 and was subsumed by G.
