Illustrated by colour frontispiece, by plan and diagrams, and throughout by colour and black and white photographs. Pictorial endpapers. Evocative photographs of Ironbridge and Coalbrookdale, one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution in England, by Harry Sowden (b.1929), photographer and designer. The text is by Neil Cossons (b.1938), distinguished museum administrator and industrial archaeologist, first Director of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust in 1971. Subsequently he headed the National Maritime Museum, the Science Museum and English Heritage.
